New AIHW Report: Australian Hospital Statistics 2010-11

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has released two new reports today:

Australian hospital statistics 2010-11 presents a detailed overview of Australia's public and private hospitals. In 2010-11, there were 8.9 million separations from hospitals including: 4.9 million same-day acute separations; 3.5 million overnight acute separations; and about 367,000 sub-acute and non-acute separations. There were also 7.7 million non-admitted patient emergency services and almost 43 million outpatient services provided by public hospitals.

Australia's hospitals 2010-11 at a glance provides information on Australia's 1,340 public and private hospitals. In 2010-11, there were 8.9 million hospitalisations, including 2.2 million admissions involving surgery. Public hospitals provided 7.7 million non-admitted patient emergency services, with 70% of patients seen within recommended times for their triage category. This publication is a companion to Australian hospital statistics 2010-11.

Health Workforce 2025 Vol 1 & 2 released today


Health Workforce 2025 (HW2025) provides medium to long-term national workforce planning projections for doctors, nurses and midwives.  HW2025 projects the estimated numbers of professional entry students, postgraduate and specialist trainees that will be required for these professions between 2012 and 2025. It also contains detailed modelling on workforce supply, demand, training and distribution.

Wiley Online Library Quiz

The first Wiley Online Library Quiz for 2012 has begun.  The quiz is aimed at helping users with their research and study, by familiarising them with the online content and features of the Wiley Online Library.  Competition runs from 27 March to 11 May 2012.  Great prizes to be won including five iPad2s, five iPod Nanos and ten iPod Shuffles. ASTSS Awards for research into traumatic stress now open

The Australasian Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ASTSS) offers three annual awards: AUD $1000; $500 and $250 and one year’s membership of ASTSS; for academic excellence in research into traumatic stress.   The purpose is to encourage relatively new researchers in the field.  Papers will be rated primarily for their contribution to the field of trauma research. Additional factors considered in assessment will be originality, topicality, methodology, style and format.

The closing date for submissions for the 2011 award is Thursday 31 May 2011.
