The Alf Kretschmar Award 'Caring for the person with cancer – a positive nursing experience' aims to involve enrolled nurses, undergraduate student nurses and assistants-in-nursing in the promotion of positive community attitudes about and opinions toward cancer.
This Cancer Council Queensland essay competition is named after the late Alf Kretschmar who was the first field officer with Cancer Council Queensland. Mr Kretschmar attached particular importance to providing information about cancer to the community. This award stands in memory of Alf Kretschmar in order that his work be continued.
First prize includes $1000, plus travel, daily allowance and registration costs to attend the Annual Oncology Nurses Group Conference. A second prize of $500 and four merit prizes of $100 are also awarded.
